SYNOPSIS
Tired of the struggle with her rock band, where she sings and plays the trumpet, Karen leaves Brasilia, the city her grandfather helped to build. Karen tries her luck in Berlin, following the steps of her former partner Artur. The invitation comes from Martin, a friend with whom they form an unpredictable triangle.
THE FILM
We Still Have the Deep Black Night is a pulsating movie. It could not be otherwise in a film where the music and the locations are elevated to character status. The fact that the protagonists are real musicians imbues the movie with musical intensity unprecedented in recent Brazilian cinema.
Produced by 400 Filmes in coproduction with Dezenove Som e Imagens, managed by veteran Sara Silveira, We Still Have the Deep Black Night brought together a remarkably talented team of technicians and artists. Such as the American music producer Lee Ranaldo (founder of the iconic indie rock band Sonic Youth) and the German production designer Tamo Kunz (collaborator of renowned filmmaker Fatih Akin in movies like In the Fade and Head-On). The film was shot in Brasilia and Berlin, in 2017. The release took place in 2019 (at the 43rd São Paulo International Film Festival) and it was awarded with the Best Cinematography and the Best Editing prizes at the 52nd Brasilia Film Festival and the Best Performance prize at BAFICI 2021. The film was commercially released in 17 cities, in 2019 and 2020. In 2021 and 2022, it reached the main platforms in 118 countries and territories, including the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Spain, France, Australia and throughout Latin America. In Brazil, it reached up to ten platforms, such as MUBI, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
